Angels in Adoption 2005 - Georgia

Selected by Representative Lynn Westmoreland

Bill and Becky Rumer began as foster parents in 1985. Since that time, the Rumers have had seven foster children in their home. The Rumers have two biological children: Sam, age 23, who will graduate from University of Georgia in August 2005, and Laura, age 20, who is a sophomore at LaGrange College and has expressed an interest in human services and foster care. They have adopted two of their foster children: Nick Rumer, age 16, presently a sophomore at Northside High School in Columbus, Georgia, and Tasha Rumer, age 10, presently a fifth grader at the Brookstone School. Becky Rumer was one of the principal founders of Columbus for Kids, Inc., that established Our House, an emergency shelter and assessment center for children throughout the state located in Columbus, Georgia. Since the opening of Our House in June 2002, it has served over 4 00 children of Georgia. Becky is presently raising money to pay off the note and then Our House will be donated to its operating partner, The Methodist Home for Children and Youth. Bill Rumer is serving as Chairman of the Muscogee County Department of Family and Children Services. Bill and Becky have a very loving home and are very involved with their children. Bill brings the children to work with him to "hang out" to see what Daddy does, and he helps coach whatever sport is appropriate at the time. Becky is helping with the computer problems and teaching someone how to sew. Bill and Becky are very devoted to making sure their children learn and grow as Christians and are very active with church activities. One of their greatest joys has been watching their children learn and grow.
