Jessica Lindsey
Angels in Adoption 2005 - Michigan
Selected by Representative John Conyers, Jr.Jessica Lindsey spent 3 years in the Wayne County foster care system, which resulted in her attending four different high schools, and living in 10 different homes. Early ih life, Jessica made a personal pledge to help foster kids navigate the system and be better prepared for the real world when they become adults and are thrust out of the foster care network. At the age of 20, Jessica is dedicated to doing exactly what she committed to do. Jessica is a vital part of the Foster Youth Demonstration Project funded by a $900,000 federal grant. The pilot program aims to help foster children better deal with the real world when they become adults. Jessica is a member of the National Foster Youth Advisory Council and serves as a peer facilitator. Jessica missed out on the high school fun that most high school students are privileged to enjoy. However, her big heart and immense courage allowed her to push forward with purpose. She has the initial contact with youth re-entering life outside the foster care system. In her role as a peer facilitator, Jessica has impressive ability not only to inspire her peers, but also to convince organizations to partner and assist with providing housing, employment, and other support services to former foster kids 17 to 21 years old. Jessica Lindsey is committed to making the transition from the foster care system into the mainstream seamless. Her work with former foster youth encourages responsibility and strengthens their success as productive citizens.
