Robert and Teresa King
Angels in Adoption 2005 - Maryland
Selected by Representative Benjamin CardinIt is said that there are angels who walk amongst us. Robert and Teresa King are just such angels. Their love for each other coupled with their faith has led them to pursue a path that most would avoid. After raising two of their own children and caring for an elderly parent, the Kings decided to become foster parents. More important, they chose to be foster parents to a child who is seriously disabled, Arianna. Arianna was born prematurely and diagnosed with retinopathy, chronic lung disease, and developmental delay. She requires oxygen at night and is partially fed by gastric tube. A child with such mutiple conditions and demanding needs might be difficult to place. But the Kings were undeterred. They took her in when she was 9 months old as a foster child and 2 years later adopted her. Despite her fragile health and the constant care that she requires, the Kings never complain. Instead they tell stories about the immense joy she has brought to them. Their boundless love even encompasses Arianna's grandfather. They recognize that he is her only grandfather and they have chosen to keep him in her life. The Kings continue on their path and are now caring for another medically fragile child.
