Selected by Representative Eleanor Holmes NortonSince 2002, Karen Aileen Howze has served as a Magistrate Judge for the Family Court of Washington, DC. This follows many years of advocacy and activism on behalf of adoption. A single mother of three daughters adopted from foster care, Judge Howze brings a personal perspective and passion to her work. Karen'ts background as a founding editor of U.S.A. Today and her multicultural expertise has uniquely benefited her aodption work. Karen ws the Director of Adolescent Health Programs for the American Bar Association and managed a 5-year federal project to explore adolescent health issues. She is a member of the Probate Education Committee appointed by the Chief Judge to develop a comprehensive training program to qualify attorneys for court appointment and develop practice standards, and is Chair of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia Adoption Rules Advisory Committee. Karen has served as a volunteer on numerous boards and committees on behalf of adoption.
