Gill-Pratt, Renee

Angels in Adoption 2005 - Louisiana

Selected by Representative William Jefferson

Renee dedicated her life to children, beginning her career as a teacher for special needs children for 16 years. Recognizing how one person can affect the life of children with special needs, Renee decided to adopt a special needs child, Dyanna Marie. Having no biological children, Renee dedicated her life to raising Dyanna as a successful individual. Dyanna has proven to be just that by completing Xavier Prep High School in New Orleans and now pursuing a degree at Delgado Community College. By mainstreaming Dyanna's experiences and focusing on quality education with her personal experience as a special needs instructor, Renee has had a tremendous effect on a child who may otherwise have never been adopted or received that type of loving environment. Renee has gone on to share her experience in education and child welfare through the Louisiana House of Representatives and currently, the New Orleans City Council. Her service also includes membership and leadership positions in a number of organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, and One Church One Child. She also ohas received numerous other honors for her service, including the Louisiana Association of Educators Outstanding Legislator Award, and a nomination by the U.S. Department of Education for the Education Heroes Award. But perhaps Renee's greatest accomplishment has been the personal experience that she has shared through raising and nurturing her daughter, Dyanna Marie.
