Angels in Adoption 2005 - Florida

Selected by Representative Mark Foley

In Spring 2003, after three failed attempts for a child through a private adoption source, David and Ellen Earle were blessed with a phone call that brought their daughter, Katherine Anne Earle, into their lives. The biological parents had three older children and felt they were not able to care for a fourth child. Ellen, who had a professional career, now became a stay-at-home mother. While celebrating their daughter's first birthday, the Earles received a phone call from the adoption attorney who had facilitated Katherine's arrival in their home. The biological parents of their first child had called to say they were pregnant and due to deliver another child within 30 days. The biological parents wanted to know if the Earles had any interest in adopting a full sibling to their first child. The attorney advised the Earles they had only 24 hours to make a decision as there were 14 other couples waiting for a child. The Earles spent the night talking over the pros and cons of a second child, and they agreed to adopt a second child. Katherine's sister, Elizabeth Beret Earle, joined the Earles' household. David is an attorney in Stuart, Florida, and Ellen is a full-time mother and homemaker.
