Jerre Cory

Angels in Adoption 2005 - Michigan

Selected by Representative Mike Rogers

Jerre Cory, M.A., C.S.W., has worked in this community with children and families for over 35 years. In that time, she has functioned in many roles to help provide services to children in need. Jerre began her career helping children as a teacher and counselor, reaching countless children throughout mid-Michigan at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. During a sabbatical, Jerre expanded her reach by working as a social worker with the Hospice of Lansing, helping over 400 families transition following a death in the family. It is during this time that Jerre founded "Kids for Kids" to address the needs of grieving children. Following the development of these programs, Jerre continue to innovate and expand her sphere of assistance. She founded and served as director of Ele's Place. Still striving to reach more children and families in need of help, Jerre also began working with Community Mental Health to develop a school intervention program, working to provide home visists in local elementary schools as well as providing training courses to help equip teachers with tools to assist in crisis intervention. Through Jerre's tireless commitment and leadership, that vital program has now been expanded to 33 elementary schools across the state.

It is Jerre's most recent project, however, that we feel makes her an ideal selection as an Angel in Adoption. Jerre has recently begun working, in cooperation with Child and Family Services, to develop a program and shelter known as Angel House. This amazing program provides emergency shelter for up to 15 children who are taken into protective custody, as well as providing accommodations for the non-offending parent, a forensic interview center, medical exam area, and treatment facilities to ensure that children in these situations can be assured safety and medical attention through the least traumatic means possible. Over her 35-year career, Jerre Cory has demonstrated a supreme dedication and commitment to acting and speaking on behalf of children and providing support to those children and their families who need it most.
