Editor's Picks

An eclectic selection of books forthe present and future dads in our families, whether for yourself or a gift to a father or father-to-be in your life.

1) Adoption Nation
Arguably one of the best books ever written about adoption, this is the book that explains how adoption really works and how it touches all our lives, whether we have a direct family involvement in adoption or not. Author Adam Pertman is the adoptive father of two and a prize-winning journalist.

2) Out of the Shadows: Birthfathers’ Stories
The author’s interviews with men whose children were placed for adoption is an excellent choice for birthfathers, and for adoptive fathers.

3) Wednesday Evenings and Every Other Weekend
"From Divorced Dad to Competent Co-Parent. A Guide for the Noncustodial Father." This is a practical book with steps to help noncustodial dads develop and maintain relationships with their children. An excellent tool for fathers in families with complex divorce and stepparenting relationships.

4) Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew
This book is fast becoming a classic gift for present and future adoptive and foster parents - dads included, of course. The author not only identifies issues that children may have, but also offers suggestions for answering them.

5) Don’t Make Me Stop This Car! : Adventures in Fatherhood
Al Roker’s lighthearted look at fatherhood is fun and easy to read. Some parts of the book are better than others, but the very best parts are those that deal with the issues of infertility, adoption, and stepfamilies as he faced them in his own life.
