Selected by Representative Chris Van Hollen

The Barker Foundation was founded in 1945, and is a nonprofit child-placing agency, licensed in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, with headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. Through the agency's domestic and international adoption services, more than 6,000 children have found loving homes, and more than 25,000 women experiencing unplanned pregnancies have found support and guidance. Now celebrating its 60th anniversary year, Barker's primary commitment is to help children find permanent, loving homes. Barker also places great emphasis on sustaining and nurturing adoptive families through strong post-adoptive services. These lifelong services are available for birth parents, adoptive parents, and adopted persons. Recent initiatives of the Foundation include outreach in the African-American and Latino communities, as well as public-private partnerships to find homes for older foster children who long for permanency. Barker has also been at the cutting edge of adoption practice, training, and research, sponsoring an annual conference, a workshop series, and continuing education for professionals. Inspiring trust for many decades, the Barker Foundation opens doors for our community's children, doors leading to permanent families and brighter futures.
